“So many people I love – my mother, my best friends – have had to have abortions for all kinds of reasons,” Dunham said. “I feel so proud of them for their bravery, for their self-knowledge, and it was a really important moment for me then to realize I had internalized some of what society was throwing at us and I had to put it in the garbage.”

To do that, Dunham concluded: “Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had.”

We should all be able to agree on this: Wishing you had an abortion is CRAZY and disrespectful to just about everyone. It shouldn’t matter what your opinion on abortion is, or the context of this quote:Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had.” ..as long as you have an opinion on abortion, this should offend you. Right? I might be way off base here, but I think this is pretty offensive stuff.

Let’s break it down:

Even the folks with the most liberal views on abortion agree that having an abortion is not something they take lightly. It’s often referred to as “the most personal and difficult thing a woman will ever do”. Which is exactly why those same people argue it should be left up to the woman to make the decision on said abortion. I haven’t heard any (credible) people say abortion is a great form of birth control, or that having an abortion is a walk in the park. Most people that have abortions don’t like to talk about it because it’s VERY traumatic. I could be wrong about that, but I don’t think I am.

Now let’s put the “pro-choice” hat on for a second and break down Lena’s comment: Disgusting. I don’t even need to break down the context of the quote. This quote marginalizes abortion. Wishing you had an abortion is a slap in the face to all of those women who have had to make the unenviable decision to actually have an abortion.

Now lets flip to the complete opposite side of the spectrum and talk about the most conservative views on abortion.

These folks (by-in-large) believe that life begins and conception (or at the very least at the first sign of a heart beat), and that having an abortion is tantamount to homicide. I’m not asking you to agree or disagree with that statement, it’s just a statement of fact to set the scene for a reaction to Lena’s comment.

Now lets put the “pro-life” hat on for a second and break down lena’s comment: Disgusting. I don’t even need to break down the context of the quote. For people who are in this camp, Lena Dunham wishing she has had an abortion is wishing she had ended the life of another unborn baby.

Do you see how we can all get on the same page here? It doesn’t/shouldn’t matter what your opinion of abortion is (I don’t think). This either marginalizes abortion or is wishing death to another unborn baby.

This is actually pretty impressive. Lena has done something that even the most divided group of people can all agree is disgusting.

Which brings me back to my original thought: She is either the biggest troll on the internet, or is completely out of touch with reality.

PLEASE DON’T DON’T GET HUNG UP ON ARGUING FOR OR AGAINST ABORTION. THAT’S NOT WHAT THIS POST IS ABOUT!
